Using period pants for postpartum

Using period pants for postpartum

Period underwear is capable of dealing with more than just your typical flow. They’re perfect to use as reusable postpartum underwear after you’ve given birth to help you through your recovery.

Our bodies undergo many changes throughout our lives, and those changes often accompany changes in our cycles. Along with welcoming a new bundle of joy into the world, comfort and protection are essential when it comes to navigating the postpartum stage.

When your flow (and life) becomes unpredictable, period pants by Bodyform® are available in a range of absorbencies to support you through it. Here’s more about using period pants after birth to help you continue living fearlessly, even with a changing flow.

What will my postpartum recovery cycle be like?

When you’ve just had a baby, it’s normal to experience after birth discharge, sometimes known as lochia. It can last for up to six weeks after birth and is a combination of fluids including blood, mucus, white blood cells, remnants of placenta and pieces of your uterine lining.

For the first few days post-delivery, you can expect a bloody flow with larger clots than you’re used to having with your regular period. Between the fourth and tenth days of your postpartum journey, your lochia should become more watery and have a brownish/pinkish hue. Then, after around ten to fourteen days, the discharge becomes lighter and more white or yellow in colour.

The way you experience lochia can vary greatly from person to person. It usually involves progressing through several stages of products before you can switch back to your regular underwear. You will usually be given large postpartum pads from the hospital to wear immediately after giving birth before switching to extra absorbent towels. When your lochia starts to settle down, you might switch back to your regular period products or liners to deal with the discharge. Midwives often recommend using disposable maternity underwear alongside your postpartum pads just to keep them in place.

Switching between all of these different products can be tiresome, especially when you're trying to focus on your recovery and taking care of a newborn baby. Thankfully, period pants by Bodyform® are your all-in-one postpartum essential to take care of you and your flow, instead of stocking up on various recovery layers.

Postpartum protection with Premium Comfort period pants by Bodyform®

Whether this is your first postpartum journey or it's far from your first rodeo, products to deal with postpartum bleeding and discharge have come a long way.

While it is still recommended that you use the maternity pads provided to you after birth, there is a way to make your recovery process much less of a fuss. By switching to period pants instead of disposable postpartum underwear or pads once your lochia lightens, all you'll need to do is pop on a pair and go about your day. While it might still take a bit of time before your favourite lacy lingerie can make an appearance again, our period pants still offer a stylish alternative to disposable options so you can look and feel great too.

Our Premium Comfort range combines innovative breathable fabrics and best-in-class protection to make sure you can live fearlessly and limit those postpartum bathroom trips.

This type of material is ideal for postpartum bodies after any type of birth. From extra softness in sore areas after vaginal delivery or an episiotomy, to managing moisture levels to support healing caesarean incisions.

TriTech Performance for postpartum protection

Our TriTech Performance material features three layers:

  1. A moisture-wicking, cotton-soft top fabric that quickly moves blood and moisture deep into…
  2. A super absorbent middle layer that holds the fluid in securely for up to 12 hours
  3. An external secure and breathable material enables airflow and dries fast

This cutting-edge technology ensures that you stay protected, comfortable and dry throughout your entire postpartum recovery.

Which absorbency level do I need for my postpartum period pants?

Postpartum flows can be as unpredictable as childbirth itself, so choosing the right absorbency for your flow can be tricky.

In your early postpartum days, a pair of heavy-flow period pants might be the best choice. This type of underwear will keep heavy bleeding and all of those clots securely in place while you recover.

As your flow starts to lighten, you can switch to moderate or light-flow pants to manage mucus, deal with discharge and everything else in between.

Our range of period pants is designed to manage your postpartum flows throughout the day, but you may be wondering, what about at night? Our Sleepwear period pants have a longer absorbent gusset at the front and back to keep your lochia-loaded flow locked in as you sleep. So even if the baby wakes you up at 2am, your postpartum flow won't!

Which size should I choose for my postpartum underwear?

Part of your maternity and postpartum journey involves changes to your body, so it can be tricky to decide which size you'll need.

Getting used to your postpartum body can be challenging at times, but choosing the right size of maternity underwear doesn't have to be.

Luckily, we have a size guide to help you find the perfect fit, and for postpartum, we recommend going up one size for maximum comfort during your recovery.

Period pants by Bodyform® are designed to have a slightly more snug fit compared to normal underwear, just to make sure everything stays securely in place.

Didn't find the right fit the first time? No problem! We’re happy to give you your money back or exchange your garment within 60 days of purchase.

Which styles are available in postpartum underwear?

Our Premium Comfort pairs of postpartum underwear are available in three flattering and comfy styles for you to choose from:

High Waist

The High Waist style is particularly ideal for after-birth pants, whether you experienced a vaginal birth or a c-section.

This style sits just above the belly button, so the stretchy material will smoothly glide over any c-section scars for maximum comfort while you heal.

Hipster

The Hipster style features slightly more coverage around the leg line and bum, so your postpartum flow is guaranteed to stay in place for as long as you need it to.

Brazilian

When your lochia starts to lighten, you might feel more comfortable with a style that has slightly less coverage. If that is the case, why not try a pair of Brazilians?

No matter which style you choose, trust that the absorbent layers in our TriTech Performance will keep you protected and comfortable for up to 12 hours.

It can be difficult to keep up with all of the changes your body throws at you after birth, especially during the first weeks of postpartum. But period pants by Bodyform® are here to make sure that handling postpartum flows doesn't have to be a challenge. Our period pants can be used for multiple transitional stages, from your first period, to postpartum, all the way to perimenopause.
